Chapter 17 - Escape Extract

I think that a main extract in chapter 17 that relates to the theme escape is on Page 142&143.

It starts with ''Look,' I said.' and finishes with 'Will you do it with me? Please!'

I think that this extract is really important because to me the word escape means actually physically getting away from something or someone and in this extract that is what Holden is talking about. Holden is talking about wanting to leave to go somewhere else with Sally and he comes up with this idea to run away for a few weeks. Once Holden has explained to Sallyhis idea, he decides that he does not only want to run away for a few weeks but run away forever. In this extract he mentions marriage but this is a huge difference in comparison to Holden not being able to make a commitment to school but he wants to commit to marrying somebody. This is as if Holden would like to completely escape from his entire life in New York and sort of make a whole new start alongside Sally. I think that this whole time Holden has been wanting to escape but he did not dare to go because maybe he did not want to go alone but now that he has met up with his old friend and now he feels it would be an appropriate time to leave. Holdens says 'I have 180 bucks in the bank' and I think that Salinger purposefully makes Holden say this so that it seems more believable and so that it puts it into our mind that he might actually try his hardest to leave. I think that this extract has meant that Holden really does want to leave and it is as if he has spent time planning out his escape but he does not have the guts to be able to do it.
