Chapter 14 - Escape Extract

On Page 107 I think that there is an extract that is linked to the theme 'Escape'.

It starts with 'Finally, though, I got undressed and got in bed.' to page 109 where it says 'They sound so phony when they talk'.

In this extract Holden is thinking about religion. He mentions wanting to pray but he does not feel as though he would be allowed to as he doesn't do it all the time he just wants to do it when things are not going his way. Maybe this is trying to show that Holden would like to be able to escape to religion but he is unable to because he does not believe in things that are in the bible. It also mentions that Holden was taught about the Bible in school by a minister and maybe Holden is trying to escape to his thoughts about being back at school because he realised that it was not actually that bad and he would rather be there than in New York now.

Another little extract in this chapter is when Holden is talking about smoking. Holden is trying to do some praying but his mind keeps wondering onto his thoughts of Sally so he decides to have a cigarette. This extract starts on page 109 with 'Anyway, when I was in bed, I couldn't pray worth a damn.' to 'I'm physic.'
To me it is as if Holden escapes to the pleasure of having a cigarette whenever times are hard or when he just feels as though he needs to fit in more. Maybe Holden feels as though he can be happy if he smokes as cigarette so it is as if he is escaping to a place that to him is happy.
